With green energy to the Zwölferhorn

Since June 2024, the Zwölferhorn cable car has been the world’s first energy-autonomous cable car up St. Gilgen’s local mountain.

THE WORLD’S FIRST CABLE CAR – AUTONOMOUSLY POWERED BY SOLAR ENERGY

The time has come: from now on, the yellow and red gondolas of our Zwölferhorn cable car will travel up to our Hörndl using only the power of nature. A project that sets an example for the entire cable car industry in terms of sustainability and environmental protection.

This innovative project, which will make the surplus electricity available to the municipality of St. Gilgen, is a very personal concern of the cable car operators. It is intended to show that sustainable development in tourism is possible – and this has been absolutely successful with the construction of the photovoltaic system on the southern slope of the mountain station.

This project is funded by the Climate and Energy Fund and is carried out under the program „Muster- und Leuchtturmprojekte Photovoltaik“.

SOLAR POWER PLANT AT HÖRNDL

All companies involved in the construction worked together in an innovative and future-oriented manner to create a plant that enables sustainable regional energy production on a large scale and at the same time is optimally embedded in nature, so that the enjoyment of nature on the Zwölferhorn remains unspoilt. As the solar power plant on the Hörndl generates more electricity than is needed to operate the cable car, a battery storage system was developed for the surplus electricity, which provides additional relief for the electricity grids.

ENERGY AUTONOMOUS FROM APRIL TO SEPTEMBER

930,900 kWh ANNUAL ENERGY PRODUCTION

EQUIVALENT TO 3,900 TREES PLANTED PER YEAR

approx. 300,000 kWh overproduction of solar power

211t saved co2 emissions

Powered by Nature.

On December 25 the Zwölferhorn Cable Car will open its doors again. We look forward to seeing you!
